THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- 01
Xiamen's current spatial plan treats islands, bays, coasts, and mountain-to-sea public corridors as one connected urban system and applies different levels of shoreline protection.
- 02
Xiamen opened as a commercial port in 1843, and Gulangyu became an international settlement in 1903, making the area an important window for Chinese-foreign exchange.
- 03
Gulangyu's historic community was jointly shaped by local Chinese, returned overseas Chinese, and foreign residents, producing a mix of Southern Fujian and international architecture and the local Amoy Deco style.
BILINGUAL TRANSCRIPT
What makes Xiamen unforgettable is not one view, but the way islands, bays, streets, and people face the sea together.
The city has grown through an island-and-bay landscape on the western side of the Taiwan Strait.
Here, water does more than shape the map; it carries people, goods, memory, and ideas.
Xiamen became a commercial port in 1843, changing Gulangyu across the narrow Lujiang Strait.
It was through this port that the city entered wider networks of trade and cultural exchange.
That open character continues, because Xiamen Port still links the coast with many places in China and overseas.
Across the water, Gulangyu can still be reached only by ferry.
In 1903, it became an international settlement shaped by local Chinese, returned overseas Chinese, and foreign residents.
The result was not only a meeting of people but also a new urban culture.
Southern Fujian houses, Western-style buildings, gardens, and winding roads came together, while a local style called Amoy Deco grew from their mix.
Rather than simply copying the outside world, Gulangyu turned different influences into something rooted in Xiamen.
The same power of change appears in ordinary Minnan, or Southern Fujian, life.
On neighborhood streets, Minnan speech, red-brick buildings, shacha noodles, and Nanyin—a gentle old music tradition—remain part of local culture.
What links these scenes is the ability to welcome something new without losing a local voice.
In this sense, openness enters kitchens, conversations, and community events instead of remaining only at the port.
Yet a city known to the world must protect the places where people live.
Because Gulangyu has no road to the main island, ferry access can help control visitor pressure.
Only by limiting commercial growth and visitor numbers can the island keep its historic setting and public services.
Today, local management treats Gulangyu as a historic international community, a living community, and a visitor site together.
While Xiamen connects its port and bays, it also protects coastlines, old streets, and neighborhood life.
At evening, a ferry crosses the water, a bowl of noodles warms a small shop, and old houses face the harbor.
That is Xiamen: a city whose door opens to the sea, while its roots remain in life beside it.
