THREE THINGS TO KNOW

  1. 01

BILINGUAL TRANSCRIPT

  1. How can a loose group of hairs become a brush that holds ink, forms a point, and springs back?

  2. The answer lies not in one precious material, but in selection, arrangement, binding, and mounting.

  3. A Warring States brush used rabbit hair, bamboo, thread, and lacquer to join its parts.

  4. This object is evidence of an early structure, not proof that one famous person invented every brush.

  5. Makers may choose goat, rabbit, weasel, badger, horse, pig bristle, or synthetic fibers.

  6. Goat hair is often softer and some other hairs stiffer, but length, thickness, and mixture also matter.

  7. Makers first sort hairs by length, thickness, color, and natural-tip condition.

  8. Fluffy, bent, broken, or blunt hairs are removed because they can split the point or disturb the bundle.

  9. Workers comb hairs in water, align their natural tips, and trim the roots without cutting the fine ends.

  10. When a wet tip is spread and pressed, an even edge suggests good alignment.

  11. Next comes matching: makers may combine two or three kinds of hair, or place supporting hairs inside softer outer layers.

  12. Even combing and wrapping help the brush head stay balanced instead of leaning to one side.

  13. This layered bundle balances flexibility with support, but there is no universal recipe for every style or brush size.

  14. Ink enters the narrow spaces between neighboring hairs, where capillary action helps the bundle carry liquid.

  15. The amount carried also changes with hair spacing, liquid thickness, and how the brush is dipped or lifted.

  16. In a wet brush, surface tension pulls nearby hairs together, while their bending stiffness resists complete collapse.

  17. That balance helps the tip gather after pressure, while the chosen lengths, diameters, and layers tune its rebound.

  18. After shaping and drying, the root is tied firmly, treated with binding material, and fitted or glued into the shaft.

  19. Final picking removes stray or damaged hairs that could cause shedding, scratching, or an uneven point.

  20. You can observe four traditional qualities: a pointed closed tip, even spread hairs, a rounded body, and useful rebound.

  21. These are clues, not one fixed test, and Huzhou, Xuan, Yangzhou, and Huizhou traditions use different materials and methods.

  22. A good brush is therefore an engineered bundle: many small choices work together to store ink, keep a point, and respond to movement.
