THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- 01
Taiyuan is surrounded by mountains on three sides, the Fen River runs north to south through it, and the city known historically as Jinyang dates its founding to 497 BC.
- 02
The Fen River nurtured Taiyuan's early urban life, and Jinci was established to honor Tang Shuyu, who is closely linked to the early history of Jin.
- 03
Jinci stands at the source of Jin water and combines springs, old trees, a temple garden, the Song-era Hall of the Holy Mother, the cross-shaped Flying Bridge, and important painted clay figures.
BILINGUAL TRANSCRIPT
To understand Taiyuan, do not begin with coal; begin with water.
The capital of Shanxi stands between mountains, with the Fen River running from north to south through the city.
This river does more than divide the map: it has helped shape Taiyuan's life for thousands of years.
The city was known as Jinyang, and its history as a city reaches back to 497 BC.
Taiyuan's deepest water memory lies southwest of the center, at Jinci.
Jinci is an old temple garden beside the source of the Jin River.
It honors Tang Shuyu, an early ruler linked to the state of Jin.
Here, streams pass old trees, halls, and stone paths, making water part of both worship and design.
The Hall of the Holy Mother and the cross-shaped Flying Bridge over the Fish Pond are major works of Song architecture.
Inside the hall, a group of Song painted clay figures gives the sacred space a human presence.
What makes Jinci special is not one building, but the way water, gardens, art, and memory form a whole.
Water here was never only decoration; it also fed channels and fields around ancient Jinyang.
Centuries later, another force came to define Taiyuan: industrial fire.
During the twentieth century, coal, steel, chemicals, and heavy machines turned it into a major industrial city.
Factories brought jobs and strength, but growth also placed heavy pressure on air, hills, and groundwater.
Because of groundwater use and coal development, Jinci Spring stopped flowing in 1994.
It was not until people changed how water and mining were managed that the spring could return.
After years of closing wells, replacing water sources, planting trees, and adding water back to the ecosystem, it began flowing again in 2023.
The Fen River has also changed through long-term pollution control and ecological repair.
By 2021, a forty-three-kilometer green river corridor ran through the urban area.
Today, people walk, cycle, play ball, and watch birds beside water that once carried serious pollution.
Rather than hiding its industrial past, Taiyuan is learning to measure progress by what it can repair.
At sunrise, factory lights fade while runners move beside the Fen River and birds lift from the reeds.
Follow the water, and Taiyuan becomes clear: an ancient city of stone and steel, still learning to keep its river alive.
