In the Northern Song period, official Zhang Boyu encouraged Fuzhou households to plant banyans; the resulting shade helped establish Fuzhou's name Rongcheng, or Banyan City.
- 02
The Min River crosses Fuzhou, whose long-term urban identity links a river basin, the sea, historic ports, transport, and cultural exchange.
- 03
Fuzhou's modern shipyard and naval school were established in 1866, and the school taught foreign languages, mathematics, navigation, and shipbuilding-related subjects.
BILINGUAL TRANSCRIPT
In Fuzhou, deep roots and open water tell the same story.
Known as the City of Banyans, Fujian's capital grew where the Min River meets the road to the sea.
Its banyan trees do more than add green to the streets; their wide crowns create cool shade.
A Northern Song official encouraged families to plant them, helping give Fuzhou the name Rongcheng, or Banyan City.
A banyan stays rooted in one place, yet its branches reach far beyond the trunk.
That image explains Fuzhou: rooted at home, yet always reaching outward.
The Min River crosses the city and continues toward the East China Sea.
For centuries, its waters carried people, goods, and ideas to distant shores.
What matters is not only where the river goes, but also what people chose to learn beside it.
At Mawei, near the river mouth, a modern shipyard and naval school were founded in 1866.
Students studied languages, maths, navigation, and shipbuilding, turning the port into a classroom for a changing country.
Rather than treating the sea as an edge, Fuzhou used it as a path to new knowledge.
Yet the city also knows how to protect a smaller, more human scale.
In Sanfang Qixiang—Three Lanes and Seven Alleys—ten side lanes branch from one main street in a Tang-Song fishbone pattern.
Behind white walls stand courtyards and over two hundred Ming- and Qing-era buildings.
Famous thinkers and reformers once lived here, but the district's value is larger than a list of names.
By keeping old homes, shops, and community spaces in use, Fuzhou turns protection into daily memory.
The same meeting of land and water appears in a cup of jasmine tea.
Tea grows on hills while jasmine grows near rivers; FAO, the UN food agency, recognized their system in 2014.
Makers mix fresh flowers with green tea so the leaves slowly take in their scent, then separate the flowers through a careful process.
In 2026, a new provincial standard for traditional scenting showed that this old knowledge is still being explained and passed on.
What links these scenes is a balance between staying rooted and opening outward.
In the evening, river light moves under banyan leaves while jasmine tea cools beside an open door.
That is Fuzhou: roots holding the city close, and water carrying its mind toward the sea.
